Canada to Launch Traveler Identity App, Plans for Global Adoption

The Canadian federal government was reported to have embarked with the government of Netherlands on a pilot program that will allow travelers to cross borders faster with the help of a digital profile stored in their mobile phones.

The Known Traveller Digital Identity was already announced in the World Economic Forum in Davos, but did not receive as much attention as it was supposed to. However, the joint venture is expected to be rolled out globally around 2020, in preparation for the expected increase in international traveler arrivals within the coming decade. It is estimated that the number will jump from 1.2 billion in 2016 to 1.8 billion in by 2030.

Similar to other trusted traveler programs such as Nexus, the KTDI will also be obtaining travellers detailed personal information for pre-screening such as university education, bank statements and vaccination records.
