Crime-fighting AI Gives Rise to Privacy Fears

The growing trend of using vision-based artificial intelligence in law enforcement is raising concerns from privacy and civil liberties groups who fear that it can be misused to secretly profile citizens.

AI monitoring systems are used by authorities to help interpret video surveillance footages. Most AI systems being developed by companies such as Nvidia, Deep Science, and Umbo Computer Vision, are now capable of recognizing individuals and threat situations in real time.

However, Electronic Privacy Information Center president Marc Rotenberg said that a lot of privacy issues accompany systems which can capture identities and make a determination using an individual’s personal data.
