Mozilla Exec Pens Open Letter on Aadhaar, India’s Privacy Laws

Mozilla executive chairperson Mitchell Baker recently wrote an open letter tackling the issue of privacy in relation to India’s Aadhaar and its existing data privacy laws.

Baker warned that there had already been numerous leaks, security incidents, and even occasions where private Aadhaar data had been published online. However, the government nevertheless continue to contravene the directives of the Supreme Court by pushing to make the identification system mandatory while the country still lacks a comprehensive data protection law.

Baker’s letter also brought up several key points such as the exemption of biometric info from the definition of sensitive personal information, the exemptions offered to agencies from accountability and legal restrictions on how user data may be accessed and processed, and the inability for individuals to object.
