Majority of Americans Want Greater Penalties for Privacy Breaches

According to the inaugural Tech Media Telecom Pulse Survey by HarrisX, as high as 83% out of 2500 Americans want harsher penalties for companies that get hit by data breaches.

84% also said that tech companies should be held legally responsible for the content they carry on their systems, while 66% consider Facebook as a media company that prioritizes particular content over others. Other results also indicated a high level of mistrust against Facebook, with almost half saying that the company does not care about their privacy, nor does it protect their personal information.

The number was lower for Twitter, as only 30-33% thought that the microblogging platform did not care about their privacy or the protection of their personal information.
