Russia Orders Telegram to Turn Over Encryption Keys

Russia’s Supreme Court has reportedly compelled secure messaging app Telegram to hand over its encryption keys so that the Federal Security Service (FSB) can get access to user data without warrants.

Telegram managers, however, refused and instead replied with a counter-suit which says that the FSB’s order to hand over the keys was signed a day before the Law on Information that gives the FSB such powers came into force.

Russia’s Roskomnadzor also warned Telegram that it will be blocked if it does not concede to the orders of the FSB and the Russian Supreme Court, but Telegram CEO Pavel Durov tweeted that the app will never give up the private data of its users, and will continue to stand for freedom and privacy.
