Slack May Have Access to Customer Data

Tech publication Gizmodo recently published an article which went into detail how popular team collaboration platform Slack handles its customers’ data, including private chats.

Slack currently specifies in its Security Practices and Privacy Policy Pages that ““Customer Data is not seen by anyone who should not have access to it.”. A spokesperson confirmed with Gizmodo that some employees do have access to data including chats, but no employees have “standing access” to the systems which store and process the customer’s data.

Slack security chief Geoff Belknap clarified “standing access” as the privilege of an engineer to simply rifle through data. Belknap said that this only happens when there is a “valid, justifiable reason,” such as an emergency.
