1.8M Voter Records Exposed by Voting Machine Supplier

Last week, UpGuard researcher Chris Vickery discovered an exposed database containing personal voter information such as names, dates of birth, addresses, driver’s licenses, state ID numbers, and even partial social security numbers of 1.8 million Americans hosted on an AWS server.

Vickery quickly reported the matter to ES&S, the voting machine supplier who managed the cloud system. It was taken down 4 hours after, but both parties could not explain why only the Chicago data was exposed.

Chicago Election Board chairwoman Marisel Hernandez said they are investigating the matter with ES&S and are currently reviewing their contract, policies, and practices with the company to make sure that nothing of the sort will happen again.
