19 Cross-Border Complaints Filed Against Google, Facebook

As many as 19 cross-border complaints which may lead to investigations have already been filed against Google and Facebook after EU’s new privacy rules kicked in last May 25. EU’s top privacy enforcer Andrea Jelinek said that they are already looking into the complaints, but with the goal of initially seeing if the companies are compliant, instead of immediately handing out fines.

In response, Facebook referred to a previous statement it issued after privacy activist Max Schrems filed a complaint against the company last month. Google, however, has yet to issue a comment.

Jelinek added that she and other regulators coordinate investigations with the authority in the country where a targeted company has its main European base, which would be Ireland in the case of Facebook.
