21 Feb Australia’s PayID Responds to Privacy Breach Concerns
In a statement last week, the company in charge of Australia’s PayID platform responded to privacy concerns raised by a Twitter user who said that it was possible to look up the identities of real people via their registered PayID’s just by entering random phone numbers into the system.
The New Payments Platform (NPP) allows the real-time transfer of money between registered individuals using email addresses and phone numbers in place of traditional BSB or account number process. An NPP spokesperson clarified that the incident just highlighted the options a user needs to carefully consider before creating a PayID.
The NPP added that the payee confirmation step was designed to prevent scam, fraud risks, and mistaken payments.
