Deleting Social Media Accounts Not A Privacy Guarantee, Study Shows

A new study from the University of Adelaide in Australia and the University of Vermont in the United States recently showed that an individual’s personal information can still be harvested even after he has deleted his social media accounts.

According to the study, which was published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, individuals can still be profiled from the information on their friends’ posts.

Analyzing more than 30 million Twitter messages, the researchers were able to achieve 95 percent accuracy in profiling an individual based only on data taken from around 8 to 9 friends.

Based on the study results, the researchers warned that an individual signing up and providing information to a social media platform will also likely give away the information of their friends.
