14 Dec Democratic Senators Propose New Privacy Bill
A group of 15 Democratic senators proposed this week a new bill for protecting personal information online, following the questioning of Google CEO Sundar Pichai in Congress.
Proposed by Sen. Brian Schatz and more than a dozen other co-sponsors including Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker, The Data Care Act is expected to create new rules on how companies that collect user data can handle that information.
The act will require data collectors to “reasonably secure” identifying information, to not use the information in a harmful way, and to alert consumers of breaches. The requirement also extends to third parties, or if the data collectors share or sell that data to another entity. The act will also give the FTC new powers to fine organizations that use personal data in a deceptive manner.
