20 Jun Facial Recognition, Palm Scanners Considered for Beijing Subways
The operator of Beijing’s subway system is reportedly considering biometric technology such as facial recognition and palm scanners to replace its ticketing system, according to China Daily.
Zhang Huabing, head of enterprise development for Beijing Subway, says that a camera or sensor can be set up to recognize commuters’ face or palm print and allow them through the gates to board the train. Commuters can just conveniently top up their accounts online.
However, the plan may raise fears in China where privacy and censorship has become a sensitive topic.
