Japan to Collect Departure Tax to Fund Biometric System

Japan recently announced that it will be collecting a departure tax from both foreign and Japanese travelers over two years old, or those in transit with stays exceeding 24 hours.

The money will be used to fund facial recognition systems which are expected to expedite immigration procedures. The Japanese government says that it may be able to collect around 50 billion yen this year with the tax.

The facial recognition technology supplied by NEC will be installed at the customs inspection area at the airports.
