Japanese PM Urges Creation of Global Data Rules at WEF

In a speech at the World Economic Forum at Davos Wednesday last week, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe proposed the creation of international rules on the privacy of personal and corporate data.

Sources say that Abe wants a framework for negotiating the rules among members of the World Trade Organization and is looking to reach an agreement to launch talks with G20 leaders in Osaka in June.

Abe also has resolved to call for the negotiations involving the US and Europe, as well as China, India and African countries. However, it is said that China will likely insist on its own data rules which will make negotiations difficult.
