NPC Asks PNP to Explain Spying on Militant Teachers

Privacy commissioner Raymund Liboro said this week that PNP Data Protection Unit officials will need to explain to the NPC the reported intelligence gathering operations on the members of ACT (Alliance of Concerned Teachers), a militant teacher’s group.

It was revealed through leaked memos from various intel units that the PNP had been profiling members of the group which is affiliated with the left-leaning Bagong Alyansang Makaban that authorities say is a front organization of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

DepEd secretary Leonor Briones likewise said that it will be issuing a reminder to school officials to refer to the central office any request on information covered by the Data Privacy Act.
