10 Aug Number of Healthcare Breaches Reach 860k in July
According to records published by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights, July 2018 was the worst month for health privacy where the data of almost 860,000 patients had been compromised.
The records showed that 31 security incidents put a total of 858,411 individuals at risk. However, not every healthcare breach has to be reported, and not all incidents lead to harm and loss to the patients. It was also pointed out that many of the incidents did not actually happen in July.
It was noted that a single incident at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City had affected as much as 301,000 patients. The breach was a result of the hospital forgetting about patient records in its former campus which was scheduled for demolition.
