Rights Group Calls National ID Program a Repressive Tool

Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay said this week that the national ID system newly signed by President Duterte is a “repressive tool” which will be used to monitor and harass citizens.

Palabay insisted that the Philippine Identification System Act is prone to abuse by the militarists and ex-generals in the government who have proven their contempt for people’s rights.

The Palace, however, said that there was no basis for apprehensions about the Phil-ID since the Philippine Statistics Authority would be working closely with the National Privacy Commission and the  Department of Information and Communications Technology to address privacy and security concerns.
