Uber Hires First Ever Chief Privacy Officer

Uber internally announced this week that it has hired Ruby Zefo as its first ever Chief Privacy Officer who will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of privacy standards, procedures, and processes in every market that Uber operates in.

Tony West, Uber’s chief legal officer, also said that former VP of privacy and security at TomTom Simon Hania will be Uber’s first data protection officer, a position required under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation.

Privacy experts such as Northeastern University’s Woodrow Hartzog say that it was surprising that a company like Uber that went through high profile privacy failures, and is in possession of a large body of personal data took a while to hire a CPO.
