25 Jul UK Spy Agency System Deemed “Unlawful”
Privacy International recently took aim at the system that UK spy agency GCHQ uses to access large amounts of personal data held by telecoms companies and criticized the “cavalier manner” in which the data is being shared.
Solicitor Millie Graham Wood argued that way the system was set up risked the safeguards when the foreign secretary delegated the power over data to GCHQ. She added that it was a violation that went undetected by the system of commissioners for years and was seemingly consented to by all of the telecommunications companies affected.
However, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal recently said that it found no evidence that GCHQ had misused the system.
