US Gov’t Compels Facebook to Break Encryption

The US Department of Justice is reportedly forcing Facebook to break the encryption in its Messenger app to allow law enforcement access to a suspect’s voice conversations involved in an investigation of the MS-13 gang.

Sources have said that the DoJ made the motion to hold Facebook in contempt for refusing to comply with the surveillance request. The social network meanwhile, is contesting the government’s demand. Both parties have yet to issue their official comments on the matter.

It has been noted that President Trump frequently mentions the gang, calling them “animals” and using them as a reason to attack “sanctuary” laws that prevent the police from detaining people solely for the enforcement of immigration law.
